Doctors Remove Foetus From 20-month Baby
Doctors at the Dr Sardjito Hospital here Tuesday successfully removed a foetus that grew inside the body of a 20-month old baby girl.
The operation by a team of 20 specialists headed by Dr Rochadi took two hours.
Dr Rochadi said the operation went smoothly during which a 30cm horizontal incision was made on the baby’s stomach to remove the foetus.
“The team then separated the intestines and kidney and the foetus that grew in the retroperitoneal area was successfully removed,” he was quoted as saying by Antara, the official news agency of Indonesia.
The foetus removed was of a female and was the same age as the baby named Ainiyah, he said, adding that the foetus was the baby’s Siamese twin that had difficulty emerging and grew with normal hair and nails.
“The operation damaged the foetus as it did not grow in the womb but in the abdominal cavity,” Dr Rochadi said.
Meanwhile, the baby’s father Nuheri and his wife Faizah were happy the operation was a success.
“We never expected there would be a foetus in our baby,” Nuheri said, adding that several weeks ago they suspected their baby was not well as her body size was decreasing and she was not eating well.
“However, after a blood test and a CT scan, we came to know of the foetus,” said Nuheri.
