Freeport Indonesia workers call off protest after deal on wage struck
Protest action by workers at PT Freeport Indonesia has been called off after the company agreed to improve their salary conditions, company spokesman Mindo Pangaribuan said.
He said the workers — who disrupted production at the firm’s Grasberg gold and copper mine in remote Papua province last week — have now agreed to return to work immediately.
“Freeport and Tongoi Papua have successfully concluded their discussions, ” he told AFP.
Tongoi Papua is the organization representing native Papuan workers at Freeport.
“We have also agreed that a feasibility study for the creation of a Papuan Affairs Department will be carried out and we will consistently implement industrial relations guidelines in accordance with prevailing laws and policies.” Pangaribuan said
Freeport Indonesia is 81.28 pct owned by US firm Freeport McMoRan.
Indonesian government and PT Indocopper Investama equally shared the remaining stakes. (*)
