Flood hits Aceh Jaya, nearly 2,000 evacuated
Aceh Jaya regency in Aceh provincial capital of Banda Aceh was hit by flood Tuesday, following heavy rains pouring the regency since Sunday.
Fahmi, an official at the regency, said that at least 1,942 residents have to flee the areas because water has inundated their houses.
Aceh Jaya regency is frequently inundated because a dam to accommodate water from Krueng Teunom River was destroyed by tsunami in 2004.
“This year, up to November 2006, floods have hit the regency for six times,” Fahmi was quoted by Antara news agency as saying Tuesday.
The worst-hit villages are Palo Tinggi, Blang Baro, Rambong Payung, Pasi Pawang, Gampong Baro and Pasi Tulak Bala.
On December 26, 2004, Aceh Province and Nias (North Sumatra) were devastated by an 8.9 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami which killed around 170,000 people and destroyed most of the infrastructures, including dams, bridges and roads.
