Japan extends Rp70 billion grant to rebuild Yogyakarta, Central Java
The Japanese government has extended a Y890 million or US$7.7 million (Rp70 billion) grant to the Indonesian government to help rebuild and rehabilitate quake-affected parts of Yogyakarta and Central Java.
A document on the assistance was signed by Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Shin Ebihara and Director General for Asia, Pacific and Africa of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry Primo Alui Joelianto here on Tuesday.
Japan wants the funds to be used to rehabilitate and rebuild public facilities in such sectors as education and health destroyed or damaged in the May 29 earthquake.
The project will cover the reconstruction of seven junior high school buildings with a total 99 classrooms and 12 classrooms of the elementary school as well as five health centers that give health services in Bantul district.
Previously, the Japanese government also donated a total of US$180,000 worth equipment, including tents, water cleaning equipment and other emergency tools.
Japan will also send medical assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japanese Self-Defense Force.
The team has served more than 4,000 people.
Japan will, among others, give new commitment for a US$1 million worth grant to the IFRC (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies) and another US$4 million to supply emergency needs, such as school and family tents. (*)
