Big on variety

Kris Dayanti ROCK bands, hip hop crews, pop stars, dance divas, deejays, comedians and Indonesian pop superstar Kris Dayanti all featured in a single outdoor event in Kuala Lumpur. It’s going to be massive and the entertainment is spread across three stages. That’s the Yogyakarta Quake Aid 2006 benefit concert that happens tomorrow at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Club polo field in Kuala Lumpur.

Once again, goodwill and charity is the main agenda and the musicians of Indonesia and Malaysia will join hands in a “Live Aid” style concert under the Force of Nature banner.

As a major event, Yogyakarta Quake Aid 2006 isn’t short of star power as it boasts some of the biggest names in regional entertainment to raise funds for survivors of the recent Indonesia earthquake as they begin to rebuild their communities and livelihoods.

Indonesian music stars like Kris Dayanti, Padi, Melly Goeslaw, Naif and Ruth Sahanaya need no introduction to local fans while homegrown talent like Ning, Dayang Nurfaizah and Camelia are the major names from the pop scene here. However it’s the rock bands and hip hop crews that look set to draw in the younger masses considering the pulling power of Pop Shuvit, Disagree, Lo, Phlowtron, Ahli Fiqir right up to turntablist group Stylustiks, featuring deejays Fuzz, Uno and Cza.

A dance pavilion will be set up with a list of top names, including DJ Gabriel, in local club culture on the decks. A theatre stage is also a plus for the concert with Harith Iskandar and Instant Cafe Theatre, among the comedians slotted for the laughs.

Designed as a music festival, there is variety on the cards and you just have to make your way across the stages to get your entertainment fill. The outdoor setting is also conducive for a picnic atmosphere but many food stalls will be open from 3.30pm to get punters charged up for a big evening of music thrills and charity that kicks off at 5pm and goes on till 2am.
