Malaysian Hospital In Yogyakarta Treats Over 4,000 People

The Malaysian Armed Forces earthquake relief team in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, will return home tomorrow after a month-long deployment.

The Defence Ministry, in a statement, said the 76-strong team, headed by Joint Operations Commander Kol. (Dr) S. Jegatheesan, had been providing medical aid to quake victims as well as assisting search and rescue operations since May 28.

Based in Bantul, one of the worst-hit areas, the 12-phase relief operation that ended on June 16 saw Malaysian soldiers providing medical help within a 20-kilometre radius of Jadog.

A 20-bed field hospital was also set up in Jadog, Bantul, on June 1 where 4,187 patients were treated until the team wrapped up operations on June 23.

The team comprises nine officers including six medical officers, 66 soldiers of other ranks and a finance officer.

The 6.3 magnitude earthquake which rocked Yogyakarta on May 27 killed and injured thousands and caused widespread damage across the capital city.
