Yogyakarta lost 1 trln rupiah in tourism income from quake - report
Last month’s earthquake that struck Central Java caused an estimated loss of 1 trln rupiah to the tourism sector in Yogyakarta, Indonesia’s second most popular tourist destination after Bali, Bisnis Indonesia reported.
The newspaper quoted Wiendu Nuryanti, chairman of the Java Media Tourism Crisis Center, as saying that hotels, travel agencies, the city’s Adisucipto airport and handicraft businesses suffered losses of an estimated 1 trln rupiah.
Hotels suffered the biggest evenue loss due also to damage to their buildings, Nuryanti said.
On May 27, a 6.3 magnitude quake struck Central Java and Yogyakarta, killing some 5,800 people.
Yogyakarta attracts tourists mainly because of its Keraton palace, the seat of Indonesia’s only monarchy, its handicrafts, and the nearby Borobudur temple, the world’s largest Buddhist monument.
