Gudeg, Once More

Gudeg Jogja Jogja is known under several alias names: the city of learning, city of revolution, city of art, and city of gudeg. Gudeg is the regional breakfast speciality (although it is not strange to find it with lunch or dinner). It’s sweet (like most of food in Jogja), contains rice, and is mostly cooked jackfruit. The best gudeg is cooked at home and is sometimes sold on Malioboro late at night or in the early morning. One of the advantages of gudeg is that it takes several days to get stale. The best gudeg is usually served in a clay “kendhil” (cooking-pot).

There are many places you can visit to taste gudeg in Jogja. Gudeg Bu Citro at Solo Street 17th kilometers consider to be one of the best. Gudeg at Wijilan (east of the Sultan’s Palace), that of the Tugu Monument crossroad (southside of Malioboro), and one near the Permata Theatre are good alternatives.

By the way, it really is an unforgettable experience to eat gudeg at the Tugu at night (11pm - 12pm). Under the light of glowing, hissing gas lamps, neon lights of the closed shops, and accompanied by the grandeur of the Tugu monument. [dejava]
